Sparkling!Tuesday, February 28, 2006Listening to Tiga - Pleasure from the bass
The end of the month is upon us, and you kind readers have helped raise over £80 for the cause just by enjoying the interesting sites in those google ads. There's still a few hours left so if you see anything that takes your fancy on an ad, go check it out (of course I will not condone clicking for clickings sake, and doing so would run the risk of google confiscating all the money!)
See you all at sparkle!

Set your Sky+!Tuesday, February 21, 2006Listening to
Tonight is 'that' episode of quantum leap, 6pm on ITV3. At the end of last nights episode Sam was sat on a bus in a very pretty little dress with a tiara and a sash :)
I'm probably going to miss it actually, I wish I had Sky+.

The SystemFriday, February 17, 2006Listening to Radiohead - Packt like sardines in a crushed tin can
The system is unfair, the system is flawed. I've been working as a web and software developer in one of the leading companies outside London for over 6 years. I don't even get shortlisted for an interview with a development job at the council that I could do with my eyes closed, because I don't have a degree! If they read the experience section of my CV before the qualifications section, they'd see I'd wipe the floor with any of their degree monkeys.
But that isn't how the system works.

More fool they.
Go it alone. Get your own clients, let your existing ones spread the word for you.You know you can do it. - Cathii Scott:

The thing I have discovered is that the people doing the hiring aren't the people that know anything about the job. Drop the education section from your resume entirely if you think that it is this that is holding you back and focus on the experience.
Great advice from a person who has now applied for 60 jobs in 3 months and not even got an interview....
Cathii - Debbie Huggins:
- The system is flawed all over. I suggest taking some of Julie's and Cathii's advice and think of a more inventive way to get noticed by the hiring mgr.
- Fairly-Odd:
- Fear not... Someone with smarts will give you a chance and not judge you purely on your degree (or lack thereof). I am a walking, talking example of that. It can get frustrating though...

Wait 'till you've been doing it for 20 years, and don't get the interview because you're too old.
Hell, even now you've probably forgotten more than these "don't know a nibble from a byte" upstarts know!
Gotta say though: If you've "been working as a web and software developer in one of the leading companies outside London for over 6 years", why the fark would you WANT a job with a council? They generally pay peanuts and, therefore, are staffed almost entirely by monkeys. (Apologies to all non simian council employees.)

SparkleWednesday, February 08, 2006Listening to Damien Rice - The Blowers Daughter
The 2nd Sparkle is happening this June, and the fund raising has already begun, last year was pretty good, and with a bit more money to spend it'll be even better, maybe even to compete with Manchester Pride!
Taking Beckys lead, I too am going to donate my ad revenue from this month to the fund, which will be around $120 (£70). So if you see any ads in the panel on the left, please feel free to check them out, safe in the knowledge that you've just made a little contribution to Sparkle
If you want to put ads on your site too, click here, or make a donation direct to Sparkle

£125 Million!!Friday, February 03, 2006Listening to
We've got a syndicate at work, I started it last week for euromillions, we won about £16 between 17 of us. We've put it all back on this weeks :)
It's a long shot though, 76,000,000 to 1 chance of winning the jackpot. If you built a roulette wheel with each possible number on an inch wide box, the wheel would look like this!

That's 380 miles across! Imagine a ball bouncing around that, it's no wonder it's rolled over like 10 times in a row. But the odds of winning anything at all are something like 24 to 1, a bit better than on the national lottery, so I might get a bit lucky :)

- If you wrote down all of the availabe number combinations on seperate pieces of paper, and then put all those pieces of paper into a hat... I reckon you'd have to have a hat about the size of Belgium...
- Becky EnVérité:
- They should make that wheel! That would be excellent!! Just imagine the TV show!!! They could get Mr T to spin it each week!!!!
